Gills head coach Ady Pennock speaks to the press ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet League One fixture against Coventry City
Head coach Ady Pennock says his team must build on their performance against Chesterfield on Tuesday for the weekend's trip to the Ricoh Arena to face Coventry City.
Russell Slade's Sky Blues sit bottom of the Sky Bet League One table, and haven't won in the league since November, but Pennock believes his team will have to be clinical to take three points from the West Midlands.
Pennock on…Saturday’s match against Coventry: “We want to get the ball down in good areas and play like we did on Tuesday, and be a bit more clinical in front of goal while keeping a clean sheet.
“We all know the pitch isn’t great and will be soft and bumpy. If we can’t find space we might have to win our battles and do the basics. If we do the basics properly, our ability should come through.
"For a club like Coventry to go through what they are going through makes me feel sorry for the fans, but we have to go there as Gillingham Football Club and make sure we get those three points.”
Pennock on…the Gills' formation on Saturday: “I don’t think there will be any surprises. I liked the shape [against Chesterfield on Tuesday] and we created a lot of chances, so don’t be surprised if we keep the same shape.”
Pennock on…loan striker Joe Quigley: “Joe played 45 minutes for Bournemouth’s reserves on Wednesday, but their club doctor wants him to play 90 minutes next week, so it’s in their hands.
“Joe said to me that he was told if he played 45 minutes in the week then he should be ready for the Coventry game, but that wasn’t to be. The doctors have the power, and are looking after him to make sure he is 100 per cent to come in straight away. It’s disappointing but he’s chomping at the bit to get back.”
Pennock on… Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Chesterfield: “I thought we played well; it was one of best performances since I came here in the six matches we have played. We created lots of chances, but I am disappointed because of the result and because we let in an equaliser 20 seconds from time.
“I wasn’t happy [on Tuesday evening] because I care about the club. We are in a situation where we should be winning these games. The players deserved three points.”
