GILLS SIGN DEON BURTON

7 August 2012

Striker signs one-year deal at MEMS Priestfield

Gills Manager Martin Allen today added to his striking options with the capture of former Premiership hitman Deon Burton.

The Jamaican international striker began his career with Portsmouth ahead of a £1 million move to Derby County, making 125 appearances in the Premier League.

In 2002 he returned to Portsmouth, spearheading the Fratton Park outfits successful push for promotion from the Championship.

He first played under Martin Allen in 2004/05, playing a key role in helping Allen’s Brentford squad reach the League One play-offs.

Recent seasons have seen Deon enjoy prolific success with Rotherham, Sheffield Wednesday and Charlton ahead of a two season spell in the Azerbaijan Premier League, playing for Tony Adams club Gabala.

The 35 year-old joins the Gills on an initial one year contract and could play a part in this evening’s friendly with Watford.

On signing the striker Martin Allen told the club’s official website:

“We have been after Deon for a few weeks whilst he’s been training at a Division One club – they offered him a deal but this morning our Chairman offered the player a better deal and we are delighted this morning that he has agreed to sign for us on a one-year deal.

“He’s fit as a butcher’s dog – he’s got a great attitude, he’ll be good for our younger players and he will be good around the club.

“This has been going on now for a good few weeks and its good the Chairman has managed to pull it off this morning.”
