MARTIN: "IT'S AN HISTORIC DAY"

23 February 2013

Martin delighted to get three points and break club record

Martin Allen delivers his immediate reaction following the 1-0 win over Chesterfield at the ProAct Stadium.

The result keeps Gillingham at the top of the league table, and in the process, sets a new club record of 11 away league wins in a single season.

In his post-match press conference the Manager said:

“It’s another victory for the club and it’s an historic day let’s be honest for the supporters, the players and for the Chairman.

“To be the Manager and get this record, I’m very proud.

“We played fantastic football today, the pitch wasn’t as good as what I expected at Chesterfield but we moved the ball about the pitch. The last 20 minutes was a bit scary but we’ve seen it a million times and we defended in numbers.

“We have strong centre backs; we have good full backs and a fantastic goalkeeper. It was great backing from the supporters aswell because they sang in the freezing cold non-stop didn’t they?

“We should have had two more goals on the counter attack but we didn’t quite convert them.

“I think that was the longest game of football in the history of football matches with seven minutes of extra time, I thought `Match of the Day` was about to start any minute.

“It was a fantastic performance from our squad.

“We defend as a team and attack as a team and it was very difficult to make any substitutions because it’s tough making the decision as to who can go on the pitch to help our team and help our cause.

“Fish came off with a twisted ankle so Whelpdale went to right-back so we made a couple of changes pretty quick in the technical area which seemed to work.

“Deon came on and did really well but Cody hooking that one in off the corner, it’s the first time we have scored away from home from a corner for 16 games.

“To win away, get a clean sheet and score from a set play that has been worked on, as a Manager, our supporters should be very happy.”
