Midfielder Mark Bentley signed for Gillingham in May 2006 after playing a major role in the Southend United side that enjoyed consecutive promotions in 2004/05 and 2005/06.  He made his debut in the season opening 2-1 home win over Huddersfield Town.

Bentley was a virtual ever present for the Gills in 2006/07 scoring 4 goals in his 41 League appearances and finishing runner-up to Andrew Crofts for the Player of the Year Award. Last season Mark  found the net twice in 33 League appearances which included several starts as a makeshift centre back.

Bentley made his name on the non-league scene with Enfield, Aldershot Town and Gravesend & Northfleet before making his league debut with Southend.  He was appointed Club Captain by Mark Stimson for the 2008/09 and scored his first of the season in the 5-0 home win over Morecambe.

Following Garry Richards suspension, Bentley stepped in at centre-back for the FA Cup tie with Aston Villa and performed so well that he retained the role for four months. He started the 2009/10 season on the right of midfield and scored the first goal of the Football League season in the Gills 5-0 opening day win.

Injuries and suspensions have seen Mark forced to play as a makeshift centre-half once again but the experienced midfielder has remained one of Gillingham's most consistent performers.

Benno celebrated his 150th League appearance for the Gills in 2009/10 and also scored a crucial header to help the team to a sensational 3-2 win over Leeds in April. In June, his loyal service to the club was rewarded with a new one year contract for the 2010/11 campaign.
